What Drove The 65.15 Rating

Match momentum chart: United dominated the first half with consistent attacking threat, then managed the game intelligently after taking the lead.

We really took it to them in the first half. The momentum chart shows wave after wave of United pressure. We were getting into dangerous areas and keeping Sunderland pinned back for long stretches. We grabbed both goals before the break which completely changed the complexion of the game.

Sunderland switched to a back five trying to tighten up, which blunted some of our attack. Instead of pushing numbers forward and leaving ourselves exposed though, we stayed patient and controlled the tempo. You can see it in the chart, the second half is much calmer, with shorter bursts of pressure from both sides rather than the sustained waves we had early on. Smart game management.

Defensively, we looked solid throughout and the numbers back that up, we only gave up 0.71 xGA and Lammens posted a positive goals prevented of 0.94. He was commanding in the air, organized the defense well, and didn't give us any sweaty moments. Going forward, we had enough quality without overcomplicating things, some nice buildups, a few rushed passes in the final third but we took our chances when they mattered and after that it was all about seeing the game out. Job done.

Shot Accuracy Is Climbing

  • Last 3 PL matches: 39.7% of shots on target

  • First 4 PL matches: 25.4%
Why it matters: We're being smarter with our shots and executing better. The quality is improving and that means fewer wasted opportunities. Worth noting: Sesko has started the last three games, and his presence up front seems to be making a real difference in how we attack.

Lammens’ Immediate Impact

  • GK goals prevented, first 6 PL games: –0.95 total

  • GW7 vs Sunderland: +0.94
Why it matters: We went from shaky goalkeeping to genuinely solid in one match. When your keeper inspires confidence, the entire backline can defend with more freedom and take better positions. No coincidence that our first clean sheet comes with Lammens’ starting.

Bottom Line

Given where we are right now, this was a solid, encouraging performance: tighter at the back, composed when it mattered, and clinical in key moments. If we keep improving our shot selection and Lammens keeps this level up, Liverpool will be a real test to see if this structure can hold up against top opposition.
